Afghan Pink Kunzite · 48.62 ct
Afghanistan · 48.62 ct
Kunzite was named for George Kunz, the gemmologist Tiffany kept on staff, who identified it in 1902 — one of the few gems named after a person rather than a place. It is strongly pleochroic, pink down one axis and nearly colourless down another, so the rough has to be read and oriented before a saw goes near it. This one was cut to be looked into rather than across.
