Tsavorite draws its colour from vanadium and chromium, the same pair at work in emerald, and it was found only at the end of the sixties, in the hills along the Kenya–Tanzania border.
Those deposits are shallow, broken up by faulting and quickly worked out, which is why the species has never reached the market in any volume.
