Tourmaline shows one colour along the length of its crystal and another across it, and in red material that gap turns severe — down the axis the stone is nearly black.
Large reds therefore have to be oriented against the crystal rather than with it, spending weight to get away from the dark direction. Depth in a red tourmaline is bought, not found.
