Purple Spinel · 1.99 ct
1.99 ct
For centuries the great red stones set into European crowns were called rubies, and several of them are spinel. Nobody could separate the two until chemistry arrived.
They grow in the same marble, borrow colour from the same chromium and lie side by side in the gravels. Purple is the direction spinel takes when iron joins in.
