America's first gem mine was opened in 1820, after two boys walking on Mount Mica in Maine noticed a green crystal glinting among the roots of an upturned tree.
It was tourmaline, and the hill went on to yield pink and red crystals too. Rubellite is the name the trade gives to the red end of that range.
