Much of the world's commercial ametrine comes out of a single deposit in eastern Bolivia, on the Paraguay river.
It reached Europe in the seventeenth century as a curiosity, and for a long while afterwards two colours in one stone were taken as the work of a dishonest seller rather than of the ground.
