Spinel is magnesium and aluminium locked together with oxygen, and in Burma the magnesium comes from the rock itself: many of the marbles there began as dolomite, a limestone rich in magnesium, before heat and pressure recrystallised them.
The gem is, in a sense, the marble's own chemistry concentrated into a clear crystal. This one is Burmese.
