Warm a tourmaline and it becomes electrically charged at each end of the crystal, enough to pull ash and dust towards it.
Dutch traders in the eighteenth century called the stone aschentrekker, the ash-drawer, and used it to clean the bowls of their pipes. Rubellite carries the same property as every other tourmaline, though it is rarely asked to use it.
